TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE DESTINY OF OUR CHILDREN

  Learning Environment

This is seen as one of the key elements of quality education. Like in any other area, in learning, the influence of the environment could be critical if not decisive. In GSS the learning environment includes the following:

  1. Classroom: The classroom is safe, spacious, well-lit and the walls provide opportunity for classroom display;

  2. Equity and inclusiveness: As GSS ensures that every child in the community is enrolled, approximately equal number of girls and boys with one or two children with special needs constitute the learner population inside the classroom;

  3. Classroom Organisation: The desks are placed face-to-face so that children are able to interact both between themselves and with the teacher freely. The interactive environment helps children to learn from one another.

  4. Teacher Furniture: There is no table and chair for the teacher, instead, she is provided with a small stool. This eliminates the opportunity for the teacher to lecture from one end of the classroom and therefore the scope of 'passive learning'. In stead, the teacher is enabled to move from child to child, assess their progress and performance and attend to their individual need.

  5. Activity Based Learning: Each classroom has 'Activity Corners' such as a Language Corner, Maths Corner, Play Corner', 'Shop Corner' and 'Activity Tables such as Maths Table, Language Table and Projects Table. In addition, there is a 'Reading area' right in the middle of the classroom. These ensure firstly, that children have a choice of activities and are never bored as children are unable to concentrate on any one thing for long. Secondly, this creates the opportunity for each child to 'actively' engage her/himself in a purposeful activity every minute.

  6. Low or No-cost Resources: A wide selection of language, Maths and Life skill based low cost resources, needed to organise the activities, are made available inside the classroom.

  7. Classroom Displays: Displays are seen as a central area of the learning environment. Wall charts on vegetables, animals, birds, seasons, months and week and days, developed by GSS, are put up on walls at children's eye level. But the most exciting and colourful displays that decorate the walls every two weeks come from the children themselves. Their creative writing and Project works are displayed on the wall for everybody to see and all children to read and enjoy.

  8. Books: Wide selection of attractive, interesting and developmentally appropriate books are made available both in the Book Corner and the 'Reading Area'. This allows children to grow up in an environment of books, read a book any time they wanted and enjoy reading.

  9. Teacher: Finally, a qualified and professionally trained teacher, preferably a woman, in each classroom able to set up an active learning environment and manage activity based transactions inside the classroom
