Books that are developmentally appropriate
The books used inside the GSS classrooms include core readers, reading schemes and story books. They are not only attractive, interesting and developmentally appropriate but also gender sensitive and culture specific.

Being developmentally appropriate refers to a number of criteria: the size of the book, ensuring that the reader is able to handle and carry around the book without any difficulty; the illustration, so that every child will be inspired to run through every single page with avid interest, awe and excitement! the font size, the number of words in each sentence and the number of times the 'key words' are repeated in subsequent sentences; the number of sentences in a page, and the number of pages in a book ensuring that the reader is able to finish the book in one session giving her/him a sense of accomplishment! Finally, the content that would encourage the child to return to the story again and again!

Strategies
The strategies in the acquisition of the defined competencies in GSS include, among other things, the following:
  • Making provision for adequate supply of wide selection of reading materials inside classrooms. These come broadly in two categories:
    - Core readers; and
    - Story books

  • Ensuring that all books are attractive, colourful, interesting and developmentally appropriate;

  • Developing a balanced programme ensuring guided reading books of graded difficulty, matched to children's independent reading ability. Guided Reading books should have:
    - a cumulative vocabulary;
    - sensible grammatical structure;
    - a lively and interesting content.

  • In addition, wide selection of learning materials especially teaching aids, described earlier under curriculum, help learners in their acquisition of defined competencies. Similarly, wall charts and learner generated materials, displayed on the classroom walls, ass is learners grow up in an environment of learning.

43 different titles of books for class 0 to IV learners have been developed by GSS. In addition, wide selection of reading materials both in Bangla and English, developed by the World of Children's Books, a young publishing house dedicated to producing developmentally appropriate books for children, are used in GSS classrooms.
